Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II

The A-10 Thunderbolt is a single-seat, twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft built by Fairchild-Republic in the 1970's. It was designed for close air support (CAS) for ground forces against tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets. It is considered the first USAF aircraft designed solely for CAS.

The A-10 was basd on a heavy rotary cannon called the GAU-8 Avenger. (the heaviest rotary cannon ever mounted on an aircraft.)

The hull incorporates over 1200 pounds of armor. It's designed with survivability as a main priority, and will continue flying even after taking significant damage.

The Warthog's official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt from World War II, which was very effective at close air support. It also provides airborne forward air control, which means it can guide other aircraft against ground targets. A-10s used in this role are designated OA-10. the A-10 is expected to remain in service until 2040.
